Why is it that Obama occupies the same area in the political spectrum as the UK Conservative Party?

The U.K. Conservative Part is almost as right wing as the U.S. Republicans and Obama by his thoughtless inaction on major issues has shown himself to be much the same. Only now with an election looming is he making a few progressive gestures
